About the Heidlers
Biography of David S. Heidler
David S. Heidler was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on April 4, 1955, and grew up in the small middle Georgia community of Dublin, situated halfway between Macon and Savannah. He graduated from high school in 1973 and attended Auburn University to major in history and journalism. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. As part of his journalism studies, he worked as a reporter for the Dublin Courier Herald, and upon graduating from college, he entered the history graduate program at Auburn. While in graduate school, he fell in love with Jeanne Twiggs, a fellow student in the history program, and they married in June 1981. By the time he received his doctorate in 1985, he was teaching at Salisbury State College (later Salisbury University) on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, where he remained on the faculty until 1994. During his time at Salisbury he served as Director of Graduate Studies, taught frequently in the Elderhostel Program, and began his publishing career.
He moved to Colorado in 1993 with Jeanne, who had secured a position at the United States Air Force Academy. While publishing his first book in 1994, he began teaching in the history department at the University of Southern Colorado (later Colorado State University-Pueblo) where he remained until retiring from the classroom in 1999 to devote his time to research and writing in collaboration with Jeanne.
David’s parents continued to reside in Dublin until their deaths in 1996. He has two older brothers; the eldest was a career Air Force pilot who retired as a colonel to head up the buildings and grounds arm of a regional university; the other brother has directed personnel offices at several universities throughout the country.
David continues his relationship with Colorado State University by teaching several distance learning courses for the history department. He lives with Jeanne and their three cats in Colorado Springs.
